| Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. When a foreigner, i.e., a person living in a country outside of India, enters India without a valid document, or had a valid document initially but later on stays in India for more days than the permitted time mentioned in the document, then the person will be marked as an illegal immigrant in India. In 2015, for the minority communities of neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, an exception was made. Minority communities from these countries were compelled to ask for shelter in India due to religious persecution or their fear of religious persecution. After 2015, they didn’t fall under the category of illegal migrants and thus, remained eligible for citizenship in India. The population count of India in 2001, i.e., the Indian Census of 2001, gives us information about migrants, which included the illegal immigrants too. According to the Census of 2001, Bangladeshis were the most number of migrants in India, followed by Pakistanis. Illegal immigrants in India are subject to the Foreigners Act, 1946, that describes a foreigner as a person who is not a citizen of India. Suppose we look at the Foreigners (Amendment) Act, 2015, many people who belonged to the minority communities in Pakistan and Bangladesh such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, entered India with or without any valid document, including passport or other documents, due to the fear of religious persecution. Such people, who entered India before 31st December of 2014, are excluded from the application of the Foreigners Act, 1946. It is very important to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants into India as they put various pressures on Indian citizens and may pose a security threat. | ||
