| Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: ‘Achilles’ heel’ is a phrase in English used for somebody’s fatal weakness. This refers to the story of a great warrior Achilles. It was foretold that Achilles might die in young age. His mother was in deep shock. The story states that his mother wanted him to be invulnerable. She decided to dip him in river Styx as it was believed that one who dips in this river gets the blessing of living on mother earth forever. However, the body part which is not dipped in the holy water of the river is vulnerable. She dipped whole of his body leaving his heel where she held him. This fatal weakness of his led to his death in the war for Helen of Troy. Achilles died by an arrow shot at his heels by Paris, another warrior. Thus, the phrase ‘Achilles heel’ was derived. This idiom refers to those fatal qualities that might lead to somebody’s death. These qualities lead to downfall in common. The use of the expression ‘Achilles heel’ dates back to 1840 when Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote in Oxford English dictionary as, “Ireland, that vulnerable heel of the British Achilles!” | ||
