| Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow. Social media, which was created to bring the world closer virtually, has in fact resulted in an addictive phenomenon which has led to an increase in the number of anxiety and depression-related cases. ‘Social detox’ is an up and coming term, which refers to a social blackout for a certain number of days, to essentially give the mind and soul a rest from the constant updates. However, with the world that we live in, this isn’t the ideal answer to our problems. A ‘social detox’ may not be viable given the work and priorities we all have. An alternative to aid our mental health and have an overall positive impact on our mood is music. Music is a universal language that is understood and felt across cultures, religions and all social aspects. Every element in the universe actually originates from a sound vibration. Simple elements of nature like the rustle of trees, the crunching of grass and bees buzzing have a calming effect on the brain and have the power of inducing a sense of happiness and joy. A great example of the power of music to induce a remedial melody for a stress-filled mind is the lullabies which were sung by our mothers at a very young age. It is observed that singing lullabies to children calms them, putting them to a peaceful sleep. Similarly, playing music while working can not only increase one’s productivity but also act as a breather amidst an otherwise stressful environment. Music is also seen as a great medium to practice meditation – the epitome of achieving mental peace. All these examples exhibit the effect of music on one’s mental health by stimulating a calming sensation. In olden times, music was given equal importance as maths and other subjects because it was known to aid the cognitive development of children. Playing an instrument is the brain’s equivalent of a full body work out, as it engages all parts of the brain at once, especially the visual, motor and auditory cortices. Music and its positive effects on the mind have been studied by various professionals, which has led to the introduction of music therapy. Music is also a readily available medium that can help individuals of all age groups battle mental health problems. | ||
