Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow. The city of the great kings of Persia, which is now Iran, was Persepolis. It took approximately fifty years to construct and was established by King Darius around 500 BC. Around here, high up in the mountains of southwest Iran, the Persians constructed royal residences and burial places. What’s more, it was here that plans were made to attack Greece and overcome the grounds around the eastern Mediterranean. In 480 BC, the Greeks defeated the Persians, who attacked and robbed Athens. After 150 years, Alexander the Great, the Greek king, destroyed Persepolis. Today, its impressive ruins remain. From 522 to 486 BC, Persia was ruled by King Darius. He reorganised the operation of the empire, established trade links, and constructed roads. Later, he went to war with Greece, but the Persians lost the invasion at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Persian gold was well known. Herodotus, a Greek historian, wrote that Persian soldiers wore a lot of gold jewellery and that the king’s subjects gave him gold as gifts. This four-horse chariot made of gold was probably given to the gods as a gift. | ||
