| Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow. Pinki Chauhan, a 19 year old college girl has become a household name across UP’s Deoria district for her ‘Pinki ki Pathsala’ – an informal class, about the dreaded kala azar disease, she takes in government schools. Pinki is a kala azar survivor. She caught the ‘black disease’ in 2015 when she was 12, and the pain is all that she remembers now. She recovered from the disease but a year later Kala Azar’s sequential infection – post kala azar dermal leishmaniasis (PDKL) in which the parasite invades the skin – gripped her. Both times she ran from pillar to post for treatment and that led to a lot of suffering and wastage of money. While she defeated the infection, she realised that ignorance of the cause was almost universal and the treatment relatively simple. The deep impact on her mind made her resolve to fight against it. Her parents allowed her to take up the cause after completing Class 12. In 2021, Pinki got involved with the UP government’s community engagement effort to create awareness against kala azar. With that, she gained a deeper understanding of the subject. In 2022, she began her campaign against the disease from her own college. Now, she visits other schools and also tries to reach out to at least 20 persons every day. She interacts with housewives and does not hesitate to discuss with men on the topic like a well-trained health worker. She has been able to reach 10,000 school children and over 1,200 households. Though small, her contribution is significant considering that India has pledged to eliminate the disease from the country by the end of 2023. Her contribution to the fellow and society is really commendable. It will also inspire others to follow in her footsteps. | ||
